A couple protesting in Istanbul's Gezi Park sit amidst the rubble while other protestors enter the park for an evening gathering. Protestors to the planned redevelopment of Gezi Park, which included a mall and replica of the historic Taksim Military Barracks, promoted by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, set up an encampment in the park after three people blocked the path of a bulldozer tearing down trees in the park, the last in the city's center. The protests spread to more than 78 Turkish cities over the course of two weeks leaving five dead and more than 5,000 injured. Protests continue with their scope expanding to dissatisfaction with Erdogan's conservative politics and the perceived threat of steering Turkey toward a non-secular society where 97 percent of the population follows Islam.
